Children with BooksPelican Post is an exciting new venture, working with partners and with charity Book Aid International, providing a channel for people to send books direct to schools in Africa. The books are in English and culturally apt for African children, many of whom have never had the huge pleasure of seeing shiny, new books. A current pilot project involves 12 schools in 5 countries. Created by Nick Johnson after working in a Ugandan school with Operation Raleigh, Pelican aims to stimulate a reading culture, through carefully selected early learning books and children's novels, in communities lacking such a vital facility. Books on the list include We're All Going on a Lion Hunt, Akimbo and the Elephant (by Alexander McCall Smith) and A Is For Africa.

Here are two very enthusiastic responses from Mvumi, one of the schools at present receiving Pelican Post books (the pelican is an African bird, hence the name):

Two copies of Tales from Africa are an enormous hit. If we get more copies, we could use it in class (the pupils are used to sharing one or two per class of 35-40). What a wonderful scheme.
I am going to read the stories onto tape cassettes for the blind students. Thank you.
